Infant Feeding Difficulties
At igniteKIDS we are here to help with your baby’s breast and bottle feeding difficulties. Feeding difficulties can be tied to a number of things and they will need an oral motor assessment to help determine the underlying cause. This will include a thorough feeding elevation of oral motor, gross motor, and nervous system function.
Feeding is an innate process that babies instinctively have. They are able to locate, latch, suck, and swallow in order to fulfill nutritional needs. But when this does not happen as it should, it can cause many difficulties for the baby and they may have decreased ability to get the nutrients they need. Physical Therapist are an integral part of helping babies properly latch onto the breast or bottle to feed and get the nutrients that they need.
Signs and symptoms of feeding difficulties can include any or a combination of the following.
• Baby’s frustration, crying, or turning away with eating
• Long feeding times
• Latching Difficulties
• Milk Dribbling from Mouth.
• Frequent coughing/choking/gagging when eating.
• Frequent vomiting/excessive spit up during or after meals.
• Pain with breastfeeding with or without nipple damage
• Preference for one breast over the other
• Clicking or smacking when eating
• Incomplete breast drainage
• Chomping or gumming on nipple
• Poor weight gain
